  • Not be able to unlock the car doors, or set the alarm off in the process.
  • Lockup the steering wheel and won’t be able to unlock it.
  • The windscreens fogs up and stays fogged up.

  • Have no idea which side is left and which one is right.
  • Going into reverse to go forward and drive to go back.

Alert Driving School - Driving Test Tips

My advice to all my students during the test is to :
  • Take your time and drive, don’t rush to finish the test.
  • No one drives at the speed limit, (don’t keep up with other cars) go at your own pace. 50km – stay between 45 – 50
  • Fully STOP at STOP signs. (Count to 3 - go after 3 seconds)
  • Follow the give way rule. If you have to give way – GIVE WAY even if the other driver tells(signals) you to go, wait until you have to go.
  • Be prepared for everyone to move in front of you.
  • As you approach an intersection, try to eye ball the other drivers, make sure that they are slowing down or have stopped for you.
  • Don’t just go by the vehicle indicators but where the vehicle is on the road and which way are the wheels pointing

As you drive:
  • Search ahead for traffic.  Use the 12 second rule, Identify your potential hazards.
  • Use your mirrors to identify traffic behind you.
  • Do a shoulder check (check your blind spot) when you need to change lanes or merge.
  • Use your indicates to communicate your intentions.
  • Brake smoothly aim to let the car roll and stop.
  • Adjust your speed that you are able to drive around and away from hazards, without sudden course corrections.
  • Position your vehicle to avoid oncoming traffic.
  • We can't see everything at once, look as far away as you can, aim high and keep your eyes moving. Get the whole picture, don’t just focus on one potential hazard and miss the other hazards.

The most common and most obvious reasons for failing your driving tests:
  • Failing to give-way or giving way to the wrong vehicle.
  • Failing to fully stop at a stop sign.
  • Exceeding the speed limit by more then 5-10km

Things you must NOT DO during your driving test:
  • Looking at the gear stick or feet when driving.
  • Driving with the clutch in too far before stopping.
  • Riding the clutch around corners / changing gears around corners.
  • Not stopping on an orange / amber light.
  • Failing to fully stop at a stop sign.
  • Only checking one side of the intersection.
  • Following too closely and stopping too close to vehicles at traffic lights.
  • Excessive using gears to slow down / using wrong gears.
  • Leaving your hand on the gear stick.
  • Driving with one hand, keeping your hands crossed after you have made a turn.

How many hours do I need?

How many hours do I need?

Most of my student if they have someone else to drive with normally take 5-10 hrs to gain confidence and then start practicing, when close to the test date we normally run through another 1-5 hrs to fix any faults or bad habits that they might have picked up.

If you don’t have anyone else to practice with we can have you test ready in about 40 hrs (Doing 2-3 hrs each week). Most people take automatic lessons to start off we and then switch to manual lessons once they get confident being on the road and around traffic.

Practice is the key to driving the more hours you do the better you get. What NZTA have done by making the new test harder, is to encourage students to be more practiced before being able to pass the test.

The New Restricted test is set at the level of driving you would expect a person to be at after about 120 hours of driving.

For more information or to make a booking please call on the number below.

We can help you pass your learners, restricted and full test by running through a simulated driving test, in which we cover the driving test area and give you a breakdown of what you need to work on and what the testing officers are looking for.

Each testing officer has 3 different test routes for the restricted and full test, and they are all different from each testing officer. (But they do overlap because of limited test time and road conditions) Most testing officers use the full route as part 1 or 2 for the restricted test.

Focus more on the right turns and randomly changing lanes on dual lane roads. Dead End streets are where you will normally do 3 point turns, u turns or parallel parking.

Signal usage: That you signal in the appropriate direction for at least three seconds before turning, changing lanes, diverging and merging.
Head checks: That you check over your shoulder in the appropriate direction before turning or changing lanes.

Theory Test - Extra time to complete test

You can apply for extra time to complete the theory test and you will need to talk to your driver licensing agent when you book your test.

Readers can be used if you have literacy (reading) problems. The reader will read the test to the applicant in English. It is preferable that the reader be an agent staff member.

If you choose to use your own reader, the reader must be 18 years of age or over.  Again, you will need to advise the driver licensing agent that you want to use a reader at the time you make your test booking.

The reader is required to complete a declaration form (provided by the agent) before the theory test can be commenced and they must provide a passport or New Zealand driver licence showing their full name and date of birth.

I hope this is of assistance to you.
